ROLF Youth Social Responsibility Program 2021 (YSR)

by Rainbow of Life Forces (ROLF): Orange Ribbon Campaign for Youths,
in support of International Youth Day 2021.

Time: 3pm -5pm (time in Malaysia)
Date: 8th August, 2021

The theme of International Youth Day 2021 set by United Nation:

Transforming Food System – Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health
The success of global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

The UN will host a Food Systems Summit in September 2021. The Summit will convene heads of state, senior country delegates, and business leaders as well as civil society and other stakeholders. One overarching issue for the summit is to develop game-changing strategies for a dramatic transformation of food systems to achieve healthy, sustainable diets that are produced with equitable access and will preserve or regenerate the natural environment. The Secretary General and other UN leaders are clear that bold new actions are required to transform the way food is produced and consumed to achieve dramatic progress in addressing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Summit will concentrate on developing specific, actionable, multistakeholder inputs into priorities, challenges, and opportunities to redesign food systems at the local, national, and international levels.

Six critical domains are identified that must be addressed for the successful transformation of food systems: 1) reinvent agriculture, 2) transform food environments for healthy diets, 3) mitigate climate change, 4) productively engage the private sector, 5) influence public policy priorities, and 6) establish true cost accounting of food. In support of this movement, ROLF is hosting a Zoom meet with youths and some special guests from different countries to discuss the transformation of food systems that prioritize nutrition through high-quality diets while protecting the environment.

The objectives of ROLF Youth Social Responsibility program 2021 (YSR) are:

  • Improving nutrition.
  • Adopting eco-friendly eating that have more positive impact on the environment and our community.
  • Promoting environmental sustainability by composting and planting your own vegetables and fruits.
  • Reducing food wastes.
  • Supporting small farmers and local produce.

Topic to discuss:

Discussion with youths:

  • How vulnerable are the local food systems in your community during this pandemic?
  • What are the current food and nutrition challenges in your community?
  • Is the climate change threatening farmers’ livelihoods and food supply in your country?

Discussion with the nutritionists:

  • What causes malnutrition?
  • Is malnutrition an issue found only in the developing countries or also in the developed countries?
  • What are the symptoms and signs of malnutrition?
  • If a major redesign of food system is needed to combat malnutrition, can you suggest a framework of practical approaches?

Discussion with Chefs:

  • An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year (that is almost one third of all food produced for human consumption) according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Food retailers and restaurants have become the largest contributor to food waste in the world. How do you see these issues and how can we improve the situation?
  • If all the chefs come together to tackle food waste issues, what are the most practical and innovative approaches that you can think of?
  • Composting can significantly cut down on the overall food waste. Do you think composting locally at the neighborhood or community-level is one of the solutions to reduce food waste?

Discussion with special guests:

  • Urban farming has much to offer in the wake of the pandemic. It could help communities decrease food shortage by boosting the resilience of the fresh fruit and vegetable supplies.
  • How can urban farming and rural smalls-scale farming be carried out self-sustainably to ensure food security for the community?
